"MESA VERDE"

If you haven't been to Mesa Verde National Park, 35 miles west of Durango, CO, you have got to go.  Mesa Verde is more than cliff dwellings and  historical sites.  Its geological formations, canyons and vistas are second only to the Grand Canyon in Arizona.  Here's an idea!  Plan a road trip.  Begin with the Grand Canyon.  Catch Monument Valley at Kayenta, Arizona. Then head to Durango and Mesa Verde National Park. Top off the vacation with a ride on the Durango Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad from Durango to the old mining town of Silverton.  While you're in Durango, stop by RE/MAX Pinnacle, 111 W. College Dr. and say "Hello."

DURANGO HIGH RISE!

One of the best traits of Durangotangs is that we don't take ourselves too seriously.  We are a fun loving, free spirited group and delight in a good natured ribbing.

The real estate industry is often a good target as is the price of housing.  If you can't laugh at yourself you have no business laughing at others.

HAS ANYONE SEEN ANY ELK?

One of the best things about living in Durango is the never ending array of wildlife.  In the fall and winter the elk migrate down form the high country and are everywhere.  Herds of elk graze along the highways and county roads oblivious to the human invasion of their habitat.

There is nothing that compares to being awakened in the early morning by the bugle of a bull elk.

DURANGO PAYS TRIBUTE!

Hundreds of Durango citizens lined Main Avenue on Veteran's Day to say "Thank You" to the men and women of the United States armed forces for the sacrifices they made, and continue to make, in their service to our country.  Mere words cannot convey the debt we owe these brave people.

BE SILENT AND FEEL THEIR PRESENCE!

Mesa Verde At Night

If you have never experienced Mesa Verde at night you've got to come visit.  Each year during the Christmas season the park opens at night with luminaries lighting one or more of the cliff dwellings.  This photo is of the Spruce Tree House.  In the light of day Mesa Verde National Park is a spectacular, do not miss destination.  In the darkness, under the stars, basked in the glow of candles it transforms into an eerie, almost unbelievable experience.  Be silent and you will be certain you sense the spirits of the Ancient Ones.

DURANGO TRAFFIC JAM

So you think you've got traffic problems!

Fortunately ours only occur twice a year; in the spring moving to the high country and in the fall returning to the flat lands.

This shot was taken on CR 501. There are as many sheep in back as there are in front.

It was pretty loud.

Each year the Women's Resource Center of Durango puts on Men Who Grill. The cook-off is their major fund raiser. This year 12 teams competed for the title. RE/MAX Pinnacle took 1st Place for "Best Cuizine" and "King of the Grill" We prepared and served 120 lbs. of brisket and 110 lbs. of pork ribs. An estimated 500 hungry people came through our serving line. A big thanks to Karti Anast, Linda Buzzalini, Jeff Brown and Andy Langefels for helping Mary & I support this worthy cause.

DURANGO MAKES PARADE MAGAZINE

Sunday, May 1 Parade's cover story was "All American Adventure Drives" and the lead article was the Durango Million Dollar Highway.

Here's the complete article:

THE DRIVE The San Juan Skyway

STATE Colorado

MILES 236

TIME six to seven hours of driving, best done in two to three days

PARK Mesa Verde National Park, (970) 529-4465

Start this loop drive in the Wild West town of Durango, Colo. Heading west you’ll pass Mesa Verde National Park, famous for its ancient Native American cliff dwellings. Then traveling north through the San Juan National Forest, you’ll follow the Dolores River before hitting Lizard Head Pass, with views of several 13,000- and 14,000-foot peaks, and entering the Uncompahgre National Forest. Explore the historic silver mining town of Telluride (where Butch Cassidy robbed his first bank in 1889) before looping up to Ridgway and then south to the Victorian town of Ouray. Here the route follows a stretch of road called the “Million Dollar Highway” (so named for the gold dust supposedly in the fill dirt used to build the road in the late 1800s) to Silverton. Then it parallels the tracks of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, eventually bringing you back to Durango.

The rugged mountain scenery alone is worth making this drive, but the colorful human history you’ll witness along the way adds quite a bit of mystique. “All kinds of people shaped this area,” says Cristy Brown, public information officer at Mesa Verde National Park, starting with the Ancestral Puebloans (formerly called the Anasazi) who built the cliff dwellings in the park. Long after the community was abandoned, the Utes made it their home. In 1776, Spanish explorers came through, and in the late 1800s this became mining country.

“You can learn a lot about all these diverse groups—especially the miners—at the Telluride Historical Museum,” Brown says. “In Silverton, you can take a tour that actually goes into the gold mining tunnels.”

SELFIE SPOT Stop at any pullout in the 70-mile stretch between Ouray and Durango, where you’re likely to get mountains, waterfalls and historic mining buildings in the background—and maybe even a few big-horned sheep.

You can live here! For information about this wonderful country visit www.HomesInDurango.com

MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE!

Durango has been good to us. We wouldn't sell real estate anywhere else. We believe in giving back to the community we love. Mary and Bailey, our Cavalier King Charles Certified Therapy Dog, are active members of the Durango therapy dog group. These highly trained pups bring joy and comfort wherever and whenever needed. From weekly visits to the Cottonwood Rehab Center and Pediatric Partners to special visits to the Park Elementary class rooms when tragedy struck, these dogs and their handlers are on the scene.

SENIORS SERVING SENIORS!

The funny thing about getting older is that more and more people are younger than you. It's the same with real estate agents. The vast majority are young folks. Mary and I recognized the importance of understanding and addressing the special issues seniors face when buying or selling real estate. After additional study and training we have now added the designation of "SRES", Seniors Real Estate Specialist to our realty toolbox.

We see more and more cases of "downsizing." The kids are grown, married, and creating their own space and that over sized house just isn't needed any more. Where do you start? What area suits you now? What property style fits you now? We can help.

If we can be of assistance to you or if you know somewhere Bailey could make a difference, please contact us.

GOOD NEWS FOR CONDO BUYERS!

According to Knight Kiplinger we've got easier financing coming on condominiums. Most condo buyers cannot obtain FHA financing because the FHA cannot extend a loan to a buyer for a unit in a condo complex unless at least half of the units are owner occupied. Kiplinger says Congress seems inclined to lower that threshold, making more buildings eligible. This would be a boon for first time buyers and condo sellers.

FIRST PLACE CHILI VERDE!

For the 5th time in 6 years RE/MAX Pinnacle's Chili Team lead by Charles and Mary Rigby captured 1st place in the Snowdown Chili Cook-off. RE/MAX brokers Linda Buzzalini, Bonnie and Glen Unis and Craig Kamps all pitched in and served red and green chili to several thousand hungry event visitors.

Durango Herald Food writer and chili judge Karen Anesi noted in her published coverage of the cook-off that: "If I wanted to take home the top prize for chile verde,...First, I'd have to tie, gag and disable frequent winner Charles Rigby so he's MIA Saturday morning. I've studied his green chili and even managed to snarf his recipe, but as he says,"you can cook my recipe but you can't cook my chili."

If you've never been to the Snowdown cook-off - go next year. It is a truly unique event that underscores why Durango is such an incredible place to live.

LOOK OUT HOLLYWOOD - HERE WE COME!

American Airline just announced they will begin non-stop (hopefully) service from Durango to Los Angeles LAX beginning Saturday June 2 and continuing each Saturday until August 22. The flight will leave LAX at 8:01 am and arrive in Durango at 11:42 am. The return flight will leave Durango at 12:30 pm and arrive LAX at 2:07 pm. The service will feature CRJ-700 jets that seat 70 people.

The new service will improve locals better access to western destinations; Hawaii, Asia and Australia. In addition it creates better access for in-bound travelers to the Four Corners Area and will be a boost to tourism. The Durango real estate market will benefit as second home and vacation home buyers take advantage of more convenient access to Durango.

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

Durango area residents and visitors will soon notice new, improved internet services. Free Wi-Fi access, provided by SkyWerx, is available along Main Avenue in downtown from 5th Street to 8th Street and will eventually be extended to 13th Street. The service is being provided in partnership with the City of Durango which owns the fiber optics.

CenturyLink, Skywerx, AlignTec and Brainstorm are all working to upgrade internet speed and access in our rural areas. SkyWerx and CenturyLink have both improved services in Forest Lakes, one of the La Plata County's largest subdivisions.

Utilizing a 2013 grant from the Federal Communication Commission, CenturyLink has already improved Internet Service in these areas:

*Florida Road (CR 240)

*Timberline Drive

*Edgemont Ranch and Highlands

*Durango Hills

*Forest Groves

*Aspen Trails

*Los Ranchitos

*Dalton Ranch

*James Ranch

*Electra Lake

*Grandview

*Three Springs

*Rafter J

In the past many of our clients who required high speed internet service were restricted in their selection of properties due to lack of adequate services. Times are changing and the Durango real estate market will be a beneficiary.

AND WE'RE OFF!

The 2016 Durango real estate market is off to a terrific start. Heavy snows and cold, cold weather have not slowed the number of buyer inquiries on our property listings. January 2014 and January 2015 both were extremely active. It appears January 2016 will be no different. Our RE/MAX Pinnacle brokers report that the main problem they're having is a lack of Durango area homes to present to potential buyers. We know that many sellers remove their homes from the market in the winter thinking it's a down time. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. The smart play is to be in the market when inventories are down and there a fewer competing properties.

Our advice to potential sellers is to get off the sidelines and into the game now!
